J-Term provides a wonderful opportunity for NCSSM students who want to travel abroad. Our international trips cover a broad geography and provide deep, meaningful experiences.
International travel inherently carries some risk. The safety of our students and employees traveling for J-Term is of paramount importance, and we work diligently, in conjunction with our travel company partners, to make sure that these trips are carefully planned and coordinated to emphasize the safety of the participants.
As your students think about the opportunities that they would like to take advantage of over J-Term, it is important for them, and for you, to be mindful of the potential challenges that the current global and national environment presents for individuals from the US traveling abroad, particularly non-US citizens and legal permanent residents (green card holders). In addition, anti-US sentiment appears to be at a higher level now than in recent years.
As we do each year, NCSSM will not schedule international trips to any country where there is a State Department Travel Advisory (U.S. Department of State) greater than Level 2. Any trips scheduled where the threat level increases to greater than Level 2 will be cancelled.
Given these concerns, you and your child should discuss whether an international travel experience is appropriate for your family at this time.
Should you decide to have your child go on an international trip, we remind you of your responsibilities and obligations:
Verify that all necessary travel documentation, including passports, immigration papers, and any applicable visas, are up-to-date and valid
Provide NCSSM with the name and contact information for a parent, legal guardian, or approved other adult who will be available to travel internationally to assist in the unlikely event that your child cannot return to the US with their travel group. If, for any reason, a student cannot, at any point in the trip, continue to travel with their group, it will be the responsibility of the student’s parent or legal guardian, including financial responsibility, to travel as necessary to accompany their child and make the necessary arrangements for the student’s return to the US. The parent or guardian is expected to arrive to be with the student within 24 hours.
Verify that your student is up-to-date on all immunizations as required by the country to which they are traveling.
We appreciate your cooperation and support.
